Iridium To Cease Pilot Production and OpenPort Combo Plans, focus on Certus

Iridium To Cease Pilot Production and OpenPort Combo Plans, focus on Certus

Iridium Pilot Hardware Discontinued

With the successful launch of Iridium Certus, Iridium will no longer be selling new Iridium Pilot terminals effective June 30, 2020. This notice applies only to the manufacture and sale of Iridium Pilot® equipment by Iridium. Iridium will continue to allow Iridium Pilot® hardware to be activated on the Iridium® network and this notice does not represent notice of termination of the Iridium OpenPort® service.

Iridium launched the first version of Pilot hardware, the terminal that allows speeds of up to 128K on Iridium’s first-generation OpenPort service, 12 years ago. It successfully provided multiple voice lines and relatively fast data speeds for customers needing Iridium’s truly global coverage. In 2019, Iridium launched a second generation satellite network and the Certus-branded service it enabled. Certus provides reliable global satellite service at various data speeds, with 700 Kbps speeds launching now.

Iridium will take its last orders for Pilot equipment at the end of June, 2020, and no longer support the hardware effective Tuesday, June 30, 2022. While this is the end of an era for Iridium, we are well into the beginning of the era of Iridium Certus.

You can see the full notice here.

Global Marine Networks – a Pivotel Company – is an important distribution partner in the launch of Iridium Certus and  Iridium Certus terminals from Thales and Cobham. We also provide unique features when you resell Iridium Certus airtime from Pivotel, including native local numbers in the US, UK and Canada.

Iridium OpenPort Service Plan Changes

This move comes on the heels of the recent notice of changes to the Iridium OpenPort service. Effective January 1, 2020 Iridium made the following plan changes:

  • Discontinue the Long-Term Commitment Activation Credit for new Iridium OpenPort activations (qualifying subscribers currently participating in this program will receive the associated discount).
  • Discontinue the Iridium OpenPort 5 Gigabyte plan for new activations (current subscribers may continue on the plan).
  • Discontinue Combo plans to new activations (current subscribers may continue on these plans).
  • Discontinue all speed discounts for new activations at 32 kbps and 64 kbps. All data service packages are available at 128kbps and we are retaining the $200 activation charge on the Iridium OpenPort pay-as-you-go (0 megabyte) plan.
  • Discontinue the Power User Program.

Effective April 1, 2020 Iridium will make the following price changes to Iridium OpenPort:

    • The per megabyte data charges on the Iridium OpenPort pay-as-you-go (0 megabyte) plan will increase from $10 to $11.50.
    • The per megabyte data overage charge on the Iridium OpenPort 1 Gigabyte plan will increase from $0.45 to $0.75.
    • Data sessions will be charged in 1 kilobyte increments and any partial kilobyte will be rounded up.
